Types of Chippers

Whole Tree Chippers

A whole tree chipper feeds entire trees — trunk, limbs, and crown — into a chipping mechanism without pre-processing. These machines handle logs 20" to 40"+ in diameter and produce chips at rates of 50 to 200+ tons per hour. They are used in logging operations, biomass fuel production, and land clearing where entire trees need to be reduced to chips on site.

Whole tree chippers come in two main designs:

  • Drum chippers — a large rotating drum with knives mounted on its surface. The drum spins at high speed and the knives slice material as it passes. Drum chippers handle irregular material well and produce a consistent chip size.
  • Disc chippers — a large rotating disc with knives mounted on its face. Material feeds into the disc face and the knives shear it into chips. Disc chippers produce a more uniform chip but require straighter feed material.

Common Applications

  • Biomass fuel production — chip whole trees and logging residuals into fuel chips for power plants
  • Pulp and paper — produce chips to specification for pulp mills
  • Land clearing — reduce standing timber and brush to chips on site instead of hauling whole trees
  • Logging operations — process non-merchantable timber and tops into saleable chips at the landing

Brands We Carry

  • Bandit — Beast series whole tree processors and high-production chippers
  • Morbark — 40/36 drum chipper and other industrial models for biomass and logging
  • Vermeer — WC series whole tree chippers (WC2300XL and larger)
  • Peterson Pacific — drum chippers for biomass and wood waste processing

What to Check Before You Buy

Inspect the knives for remaining thickness and even wear. Check the drum or disc for cracking and balance. Inspect the feed system — feed wheels, hydraulic rams, and anvil — for wear and proper operation. Review engine hours and check for structural cracking around the bearing housings and infeed area. Verify the chipper produces chips to your specification (length, thickness, and fines content).
